Movie Review: Another Simple Favor (2025)
So after the CRAZINESS of A Simple Favor (2018), they decided to do a sequel that ended up even crazier (and not in a good way necessarily). Check out my full review for Another Simple Favor (2025) below!
Movie Blurb
Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) has written a book, become a true crime blogger, and has made her mark on the world. Then, Emily (Blake Lively) comes back into her life asking Stephanie to be her maid of honor. Of course, it has to be a trap, but with Emily blackmailing her, Stephanie is forced to go. What ensues is more convoluted than anyone could have imagined… A wedding isn’t the only thing that will go out with a bang.

So, this movie was… interesting. I honestly was so excited to watch it because I really loved the first movie and I also ADORE Anna Kendrick (me and my toddler watch Trolls (2016) literally all the time). So watching this was… I don’t even know how to describe this experience.
Let me start off by saying it definitely isn’t ONE STAR. I feel like a lot of people just love to hate on Blake Lively (and let me set the record straight, I’m neither for nor against her, but leaning more towards dislike). So, with all the hate that Blake Lively is receiving, this move is getting a good bit of it as well. Now, is it five stars? Absolutely not. But probably around a three star rating max.
So, with the plot, this movie felt like it was everywhere. Basically, the set up of this movie is that Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) has published a book but it’s not doing well because she stopped posting online after a tragic event happened when she was investigating in true crime. Well, Emily (Blake Lively) comes in and asks her to be her maid of honor and suddenly, Stephanie’s sales go up and Emily is blackmailing her to be her maid of honor. A lot of people die when they go to Italy and there are so many twists that it feels ludicrous. Instead of being a thriller/mystery, it feels like absolutely chaos and hilarity (but hilarious because it can be so bad at times). I’ll talk a little more about what exactly happened in the spoilers, but the plot was more or less just set up for shock value instead of what actually might make sense.
With the acting, I honestly didn’t mind Blake Lively’s acting. Now, did I feel like it was over the top? Yes, but maybe that’s just how she interpreted the character… Anyway, her acting also added to the comedic tone of the movie because it felt very… scripted I guess is the word I’m looking for. Anna Kendrick often plays these characters who are spunky and different and this character is no different, so obviously her acting was spot on. I love watching Anna Kendrick on screen and she’s just such a fun actress to watch. The only one I seriously disliked was Emily’s ex-husband, Sean (Henry Golding). His character had male toxicity literally seeping from the screen. I HATED him so much. He wasn’t bad in the first movie, but man any time he came on screen in this one I wanted to vomit. Did anyone else feel like that?
Anywayyy, it wasn’t a bad movie overall, it just wasn’t a good one either.
Spoilers ahead.
Alright, so apparently Emily (Faith) had a sister named Charity who died when she was born. Buuuut she wasn’t actually dead, her aunt, Linda (Allison Janney) stole her at birth and used her for con artistry. So Charity still acts like a child (weird), and then drugs her sister to literally SEXUALLY ASSAULT HER. I was disturbed on so many levels watching Blake Lively touch Blake Lively and this had to take at least a whole star off the entire movie. It was gross. Then, Charity tossed Aunt Linda over the cliff and took the fall for all of the murders. It was so weird and I got so freaking confused by the end of it. Then, Emily asks Stephanie to raise Nicky since he’ll never have a normal life with her (no duh). After this phone call, Emily’s mother-in-law (Elena Sofia Ricci) asks for one simple favor (that’s hidden in an envelope), and then the movie ends. Not that great if you ask me and I honestly don’t think I’ll watch it if they come out with a third.
Overall, this move wasn’t TERRIBLE. It just wasn’t good either. If I had to give it a solid rating, I’d say 2.5/5 stars where most of the stars were lost because of the whole thing I talked about in the spoilers. The acting was fine. Anna Kendrick stole the spotlight as per usual (which I don’t mind at all because I really didn’t care for any of the other characters anyway). The plot was probably the worst in terms of what sucked about this movie. I highly doubt I’ll watch a third if they come out with another one, but that’s just me. I do think that this move got way too much hate just because Blake Lively is in it.
