Movie Review: Borderline (2025)
A literal psychotic journey of a story with more than a few “hide your eyes” moments, check out my full movie review of Borderline (2025) below!
Movie Blurb
Directed and written by Jimmy Warden, Borderline (2025) tells the story of Paul (Ray Nicholson), a mentally disturbed man who is obsessed with a 90s pop star, Sofia (Samara Weaving). Paul is so overcome by his feelings for Sofia that he breaks into her home and prepares a wedding that she DEFINITELY doesn’t want to be a part of. What follows is a bloody, psychotic mess that is sure to make your stomach turn.

This movie was… something else. The whole plot made sense, but at times it felt like we were moving without direction. While I believe it was meant to be like this, it all felt so wildly deranged and unorganized? Like I said, though, I think due to the main character and it being a thriller, the whole thing was supposed to be unorganized. I’ll get into that a little below, but I’ll talk the most about our actors and actresses (and who I thought did best) and the plot of the movie along with its conclusion.
With our actors and actresses, you have Ray Nicholson as Paul and he does a FANTASTIC job. You could watch his eyes in the movie and just tell that he wasn’t seeing what all the other characters were seeing. I don’t know how you make your expression look so blank and lost like that, but he did a wonderful job. I honestly felt bad for Paul as a character (even though he’s a psychopath) because all he really wanted was love, and all he really needed was some serious mental health help. Another of Paul’s “associates”, I guess you could call them, was Penny (Alba Baptista). She was honestly my favorite actor/actress in this film only because of how genuinely creepy she was. Like, y’all, I’d never want to meet this woman in real life, that’s how disturbing her character was (and how well she played her character). There are some scenes that she plays in where her character, Penny, is doing some truly heinous things. Like so bad that I had to close my eyes and I have a VERY strong stomach. It was rough. Not a movie for kids or even preteens in my opinion. The only other notable actors/actresses are Samara Weaving who plays Sofia (I absolutely loved her in Ready or Not (2019) but found her to be rather meh in this movie), Eric Dane who plays Sofia’s body guard (my favorite movie with him is probably Redeeming Love (2022) and I literally sobbed my eyes out – P.S. He’s the bad guy), and Jimmie Fails who plays Sofia’s fling/boyfriend. Out of those three, I probably like Jimmie Fails’ character the best, Eric Dane next, and then Samara Weaving last.
As far as plot goes, the very beginning of the movie is before Paul goes into a mental institution. He tries to kill Bell, Sofia’s body guard, and then gets sent to the mental institution. After about a half year, Paul breaks out, Bell is healed, and Paul begins his crazy plan to marry Sofia. There are some disturbing scenes and a lot of gore at times. There aren’t really any jump scares, just a lot of creeping up behind people. Although, nothing super shocking happens, but my favorite part in the whole movie is at the ending right before the credits roll.
Spoilers ahead.
So, my favorite part was when Jimmie Fails’ character, during a delusional episode from Paul, ends up in Sofia’s “wedding dress” and gets married to Paul instead of Sofia. It was very comical and I really really enjoyed that part of the ending!!
Overall, a majority of the movie was pretty average and not super memorable, but there was definitely a scene at the end that really made the whole experience more enjoyable. If you enjoy thriller movies with a lot of gore and comic relief, you’ll definitely enjoy this.
