Movie Review: Last Breath (2025)

A breath-holding (literally) and thrilling experience, check out my full review for Last Breath (2025) below!

Movie Blurb

Three skilled deep sea divers get more than they bargained for when rough seas virtually cut them off from the surface as Chris’ (Finn Cole) line gets severed and he’s trapped 300 feet below the water. Duncan (Woody Harrelson) and Dave (Simu Liu), the other two divers, and everyone above the surface do everything in their power to save Chris before it’s too late. Based on a remarkable true story.

Probably one of my favorite genres of movies is definitely thrillers (mainly survival thrillers like apocalyptic ones… haha). So, Last Breath (2025) was right up my alley and having an oddly free night, I decided to give it a go. I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

With the acting, I adore Woody Harrelson and his acting style, so he was one of my favorites. His emotions-hidden-by-comic-relief character, Duncan, brought a lot of good things to the film that would have made it a lot darker had he not been in it. Dave was the exact opposite and his all of his emotions through a hard exterior (also a wonderful character type to bring depth to the story). Dave is played by Simu Liu who is an awesome actor as well. It took me forever to figure out where I’d last seen him, but he played in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and being that it was a Marvel movie, it was definitely something that I watched right away (although I don’t keep up with Marvel much anymore). Our last main character is Chris, who is the poor diver who gets stuck at the bottom of the sea. While there wasn’t much acting going on since his character was immobile a lot of the time, I still feel Finn Cole did a wonderful job and just came off as a lovable character right away.

As far as the story goes, this is one of survival. It’s a story that makes you stop and think about things that we can’t even possibly begin to understand. We put ourselves into so many dangerous situations and that’s where stories like Last Breath (2025) find their plots. It’s in the human moments and the ones where everyone comes together for a common cause. It’s crazy that shows like this are so popular because to me it means that people aren’t working together nearly as much as they should. If we did show human decency and teamwork and basic camaraderie, this movie wouldn’t be so much of a novelty. I can’t imagine being in Chris’ position, stuck on the bottom of the sea with no light and oxygen that’s running out. This movie, though, gives you Chris’ perilous moments alone on the seafloor as all of his coworkers try their best to save him.

Spoilers ahead.

It’s truly extraordinary that Chris survived. There wasn’t a lot of cinematic changes to make this story more dramatized than it was. Chris really was without oxygen for half an hour. Yet, somehow, he had no brain damage, no major deficits, and his first words back were asking if Dave was okay. If anything, it is stories like these that reaffirm my belief in God. I can’t think of any other human explanation other than a miracle.

Overall, this movie was definitely worth it for my thriller-loving heart. I love survival stories with high stakes and Last Breath (2025) delivered. A solid 4/5 stars with it being very close to getting a 5/5 star rating. Put this on your watch list if you like uplifting stories of hope, teamwork, and a whole lot of nail biting suspense.
