The BEST Book Club Picks (from My Book Club)
We all love a good book club. What’s even better is a book club with people who make you laugh, don’t get TOO serious about bookish discussions, and actually make book club fun. So, without further ado, here are my favorite (and in my opinion, the BEST) picks from my book club in no particular order but with lots of different genres!
Home of the Happy by Jordan LaHaye Fontenot
A book that automatically earned a spot on our book club pick list because it’s from a local author, Home of the Happy by Jordan LaHaye Fontenot takes place only twenty minutes from the town where my book club is. Not only that, but many of our families were connected with what happened in the novel. This book blends nonfiction narrative storytelling and fiction for a wonderful true crime novel. Definitely a great book that will open up the floor for some true crime theories and detective work!
Happy Place by Emily Henry
Out of all of Emily Henry’s books, this one has got to be my favorite. Even my sister agrees with me (which usually we have very different tastes, so that’s saying something!). My book club actually chose this book after I had already read it, but I loved it so much that I was excited to be able to discuss it with them even though I had already finished it. You can read my full review for the sweetest romance with great friendships here.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
This book honestly broke my heart for so many reasons. You watch as a foster child goes through abuse, problems with the system, drug addiction, and so much more as he struggles to live in an impoverished, rural area. In so many ways, my eyes were opened about problems that I may not ever see. Demon Copperhead will definitely have your book club questioning what is wrong with our society as a whole and what we can do as individuals to fix it. We all loved this book so much and had a lot of good conversations about it.
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
Ugh. One of the most reaffirming and beautiful stories about when your life doesn’t quite pan out as you planned. The Wedding People by Alison Espach tells the story about a woman who is thinking about ending her life but ends up in a wedding party for a woman she barely even knows. Literally sounds so morbid but will lift you up in the best of ways. Definitely recommend this if your book club has a lot of women who are married and in that stage of life where you just aren’t sure where you’re headed!
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
Literally one of the BEST mystery books I’ve listened to in a long long time, Listen for the Lie is best enjoyed (in my opinion) through audiobook. This has dual POVs with a podcaster and the woman who is accused of killing her best friend. This one will have your book club in shambles as you all freak out about what the heck is going to happen next. I loved every second of this mystery and I will continue recommending this book to anyone who will listen!
The Measure by Nikki Erlick
One of the more recent book club picks that became a favorite of mine is The Measure by Nikki Erlick. This book literally stirred the most conversation of almost all the books of this list. Who wouldn’t want to know if your friends would check to see if their lives would be long or short? That’s definitely the question we asked each other because this book seriously makes you think about those things. Would you even want to know if your life was going to last long or fall short? I still honestly don’t know the answer. But if you want a riveting story that will stir up ALL kinds of conversations, this is the book club pick for you.
Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn
One of my personal picks for book club, Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn is one of those books that will warm your heart. With a hot male love interest, family dynamics that will make you want to hug your parents, and a lot about finding yourself (even if you’ve passed the age of when you’re “supposed” to find yourself). This was definitely one of my favorites and our FMC has so much personality and character that you just can’t help but to love her.
All the Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby
This book was INSANE. It was such a twisted thriller that I literally couldn’t stop reading. My heart pounded, I didn’t want to read it at night, and it was honestly so messed up in the best murder mystery kind of way. Think: small town vibes, cults, and tons of covered up murders. Be warned, though, this book is not for the faint of heart. Definitely a fun pick for book club that will bring up SO many questions. You can check out my full review for this book here.
Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I first read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid when this book got on my radar. We read it for book club because of the Amazon Prime TV show that was coming out at the time. Daisy Jones & the Six had so many fun things going for it. The entire story was told in interview style and held so much emotion in depth. I loved every second of it (but have to admit that I still haven’t watched the TV show 😅).
