Book Review: Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

This review will be of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him, her latest heartbreaking novel that will tear you up, and then put you back together again. I can’t remember the last time I got choked up for a book, but this one did it for me.

Book Information

Kenna has just been released from jail, and there’s only one thing that she wants to do: find her daughter. After on mistake that she made nearly five years ago, Kenna has been paying for it with her life. Coming back to the town where she hurt so many people who are still hurting just as much as she is isn’t easy. When she meets Ledger, the best friend of the boy she was in love with all those years ago, she wonders if he’ll be her ticket back to her daughter. But as their relationship develops even more, Kenna begins to wonder if she’ll ever be forgiven for her past, and Ledger tries to understand why he hated her for all those years.

Dear Lord. This one hurt. So. Much. I was in love with the characters, the plot, just everything. I can tell you right now that Reminders of Him is currently number two on my Colleen Hoover list, coming in just behind It Ends with Us. Hoover really outdid herself with this one.

So, coming into this novel, I did not expect what I got. I thought Kenna would be hard and a completely different character than she was coming out of prison. Seeing just how truly remorseful she was and how hard she worked was amazing. She was a great character and the development that she went through is admirable. Not to mention, Ledger comes just as far and is an amazingly kind and receptive person.

The plot gave me everything and more that I want from a novel. You have the romance. You have family drama. The traumatic experiences. The EMOTION. I never cry for books. I usually never even get emotional. I was choking back tears at the end. I almost sobbed. It was that good.

Spoilers ahead.

I am a huge fan of novels that deal with trauma and how you come back from it. One of my favorite things to write about is forgiveness (if you read my novel, Words We Never Say, you’d see all of the forgiveness themes). The moment that Grace steps into Kenna’s apartment? Oh. My. Gosh. I’m getting teary just thinking about it. Forgiveness is so powerful. Not only to those receiving it, but to the ones who find it in themselves to forgive as well. It was so beautiful and heartbreaking and so many other things. When I read a book, I want this level of emotion. Colleen Hoover has gone above and beyond in this novel to make me have all the feels.

Overall, if you’ve read any of my reviews, you know I’ve been addicted to Colleen Hoover lately. If you’ve read anything from her, you’d understand why I’m so obsessed. Between Ugly Love, It Ends with Us, and November 9, I have found so many great novels with great twists and even greater emotions. You will not be disappointed if you decide to read Reminders of Him. I might even venture to say it is my favorite book of 2022 so far. It truly was a gift.
