I Never Rate Books 1-Star… But These Books Were the Exception

I like to think that I’m pretty good at judging a book. Sometimes by its cover. Sometimes by its content. Most of the time (and I mean at least 95% of the time), I will NOT rate a book 1 star. These books, though, have earned the very special privilege of being the only books I’ve rated 1 star on my blog. This really has nothing to do against the authors or their writing; I just really really didn’t like their books. Most of the ones on this list are from authors I’ve read before and LOVED. But, yeah, 1 star book reviews for these. Check them out, in no particular order, below!

Fracture Me by Tahereh Mafi

This novella is part of the Shatter Me series. It’s from Adam’s point of view. If you’ve read any of these books and still like Adam, I think you’ve lost all hope. Basically he is the most bland character ever and I don’t know why our queen, Juliette, ever liked him. In his novella, he basically repeats everything that happened in the previous novel, but it’s just from his POV. It was boring as hell and from the worst character’s POV. A big pass from me.

Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

I love a good Colleen Hoover book, I really do. But Losing Hope? Yeah, a big nope from me. Hopeless was absolutely amazing. Losing Hope? It’s just a retelling from Holder’s POV. There were a couple of new scenes, but not enough to keep my attention. If you couldn’t tell, I really hate a retelling from a different POV.

I Loved You in Another Life by David Arnold

This book was so boring. Besides boring, it was genuinely SO confusing. It’s basically about these two teens who are falling in love. You get chapters between the present about a couple in love from different periods of time throughout history. Apparently it was supposed to relate to the present-day couple that you read about, but honestly? It just confused me more. I didn’t get this huge “I’ve loved you before, I’ll love you again, I’ll love you always” vibe, which is what I was hoping for when I read the premise. If I hadn’t made a promise to myself to not DNF books, this would’ve been a DNF for sure.

Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton

I’ve probably pushed so many buttons since I wrote my review for Haunting Adeline, I recently reread this review because of a copyright hold they put on the post (it was removed because it was completely unfounded – just made me lose valuable blog traffic but whatever 🙄). I will admit, I was pretty brutal, but there’s a special place in the very back of my brain for this book because I disliked it that much. The whole thing was a contradiction. The main guy saves women and children from trafficking and being forced to do things they obviously don’t want to do. But then he turns around and stalks a girl, rapes her, and “makes” her fall in love with him. It was gross. Not to mention the writing wasn’t that great either. It apparently is a whole genre that people love (some kind of dark, gothic, romance or something), but it was NOT for me. I would’ve rated it less than one star if I could have.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of the books that I rated 1 star?
