Movie Review: Reminders of Him (2026)

A movie I’ve literally been waiting for since I read the book, check out my full movie review for Reminders of Him (2026) below!

Movie Blurb

Kenna (Maika Monroe) has lost a lot in her life. After just getting released from prison due to an accident that killed her boyfriend (Rudy Pankow), she’s now on a mission to meet their daughter, Diem (Zoe Kosovic). Along the way, though, she meets Ledger (Tyriq Withers), her boyfriend’s best friend that she never had the chance to meet before prison. At first, Ledger hates her and wants to make sure that she can’t meet Diem at all. But as he gets to know Kenna, he releases that maybe what happened all those years ago hurt her as much as it hurt everyone else.

Dang I feel like I’ve been waiting for this movie my whole life. After reading Reminders of Him back in 2022, I haven’t been able to get this book off my mind. It’s always one of my top recommendations/reads, and is top of the list for me out of all of Colleen Hoover’s books. So, finally getting to see this one adapted? I was stoked to say the least.

I do have to preface this review, though, because I was a little upset that we waited so dang long for snacks that we actually missed the first ten minutes of the movie 🥲. My friend and I got there almost thirty minutes before the movie started, but it was just a busy night for the theater, so we had to wait (and I was NOT going into a movie without movie snacks – the white cherry ICEE is a must). So, all that being said to say that I missed the beginning, which really bummed me out (so I can’t review those first ten minutes haha).

Anyway, so I’m not sure if this is because I missed the first ten minutes, but the beginning of the movie felt very slow to me. As a reader, I knew what was going on and still enjoyed it, but I’m not sure how someone would feel if they hadn’t read the book at all. Getting introduced to Ledger (I missed Kenna’s introduction) was still really great. I was honestly really impressed with the acting in this movie even if the casting wasn’t exactly how I pictured it….

So, Maika Monroe plays Kenna, and honestly this isn’t how I imagined this character at all. HOWEVER, Maika Monroe did an AMAZING job bringing Kenna to life. I loved the emotion that she put into the roll. Ledger’s actor, Tyriq Withers, matched her with the same emotions and it made for some awesome chemistry. I can see why they paired them as the romantic leads.

As far as the story goes, things really start to pick up once Ledger and Kenna actually start acting on their feelings. Everything really speeds up after that and it made for a very entertaining second half of the movie. The setup, though, felt really long if I’m being honest.

With what followed the book and what didn’t, I’m sorry to say it, but you’ll have to find a different review for a book vs. movie 😅. It has been so dang long since I read the book that I’d be lying to you guys with whatever differences I would think that I could come up with.

Spoilers ahead.

Just had to mention my favorite scene ever. At the very end of the movie, after having a bro moment with Ledger and saying that if Ledger believed in Kenna, then so would he, Scotty’s dad (Bradley Whitford) spots a pidgeon. “Is that a… FRICKIN’ PIDGEON???” Best scene ever.

Overall, this movie was definitely better than Regretting You (2025), and felt on par if not a little better than It Ends with Us (2024)Reminders of Him definitely brought the romance and the feels, but I didn’t exactly get the same emotional response that I got from the book. Definitely recommend for romance lovers (and Colleen Hoover fans), but it didn’t make me swoon as much as the romance movies that I crave.
