Book Review: If Not You by Ellen O’Clover

A romance between two rival copywriters on a paid work trip gets complicated as they both try their best to win the same job. Check out my full review of If Not You by Ellen O’Clover below!

Book Information

Mattie French has always hated Campbell Porter. First because he stole the job she always wanted years ago when they were both interns. Second? Because he’s always been a better copywriter than her.

Now, they are in rival companies going on a work trip to different resorts to see who can write the best pitch for the vacation destinations. Romance wasn’t in the books, but there’s always been something about Campbell Porter that Mattie just couldn’t resist.

Review | Heidi Dischler

I obviously picked this book for my Book of the Month pick because it was a romance about writers. I love writing. I love romance. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. There were a couple things, though, that really bugged me about this romance (there’s a lot of good things, too, I swear!!).

To start off with what I didn’t like: Mattie French. Oh my gosh she was so annoying at every turn. She seemed to hate Campbell for no apparent reason (and ended up looking like a little school boy with a crush because she was only mean to him because she liked him). All she did the whole entire book was WHINE. It drove me nuts and I really didn’t like her character that much. Campbell, on the other hand? Oh my gooooodness the pining. The swoon worthy gentleman actions. Everything about Campbell Porter was to die for. I loved his character. I fell in love with him throughout the whole book. He and Mattie had loads of chemistry, it just sucks because I really didn’t like Mattie that much.

The writing was honestly really good. I loved hearing about the destinations, the emotions, the copywriting pitches as their respective teams worked on a good slogan for the resorts. It was interesting all the way around. I think the main thing that bugged me was Mattie French.

Overall, this romance was super sweet, the two main characters had a lot of chemistry, and the writing was honestly so good. I just hated the main girl and loved the main guy. Made for an interesting reading experience, though. 3.75 out of 5 stars.
