Book Review: Strangers by Belle Burden

A heartbreaking, raw, and real story that details Belle Burden’s own divorce, Strangers narrates beautifully the intimacy between two people and how it feels when it’s suddenly taken away. Check out my full review for Strangers by Belle Burden below!

Book Information

Belle Burden thought she had it all: financial stability, a wonderful home and vacation home, three beautiful children, and a doting husband. That is, until her husband suddenly tells her that he is unhappy and leaves her abruptly without explaining what happened. This leaves Belle reeling as she tries to process her emotions, stay present for her kids, and pick the pieces back up of her life.

I don’t read many nonfiction books. If you’ve hung around my blog before, you know this. Strangers, though, has been talked about so often that I felt like I just had to see what everyone kept going on about. I was not disappointed at all.

Belle Burden writes beautifully and insightfully about things that happened in her own life. I loved the writing style. I loved the way we got to peek into her life and see all the things she thought about as she was trying to navigate the divorce. It felt so open and so so real that I found myself nodding and shaking my head at times. In my opinion? She was WAY too nice to her ex-husband. I was infuriated for her and literally just wanted to shake the man.

One of the things that makes this memoir so amazing is that it’s beyond relatable. So many women have felt what Belle did. So many women were left clueless and penniless as their husbands decided they wanted another life. It left me emotional and drained (in a good way) to feel what she felt, but to also, eventually, overcome it.

Overall, if you have ever struggled in a relationship and felt like the person you used to love has become a stranger, this is the memoir for you. It reminds me a lot of You Could Make This Place Beautiful, so check that one out if you loved Strangers. Truly a wonderful memoir and healing in a way that I didn’t know I needed.

“Some people say the end of a marriage is always 50/50, that each partner bears equal responsibility... But is it 50/50 when the unhappy person doesn't say they are unhappy? When they act like everything is exactly as they want it to be, leaving their partner to guess? When they don't give their partner a warning, a beat to change course, to grow, before betraying them?”

“He kept it lovely until he blew it up.”
