Book Review: Her Last Breath by Taylor Adams

Book Information
Tess is an introvert. She isn’t outgoing or adventurous like her best friend Allie. Allie convinces Tess, though, to go caving with her. What starts out as an excursion between two best friends ends up as a race against time as they are chased by a killer through a deadly cave. Alternating between the present and the past, Tess tells the harrowing story of survival as everything around her is falling apart.

This book was such a fun read. I’ve always loved the idea of caving (the idea of it, not actually doing it myself), so getting to go through this cave with these characters while getting chased by a killer had me completely invested.
As far as plotting goes, you have multiple different points of view with multiple different points in time during the whole ordeal. Most of Tess’ POV was from the beginning of the caving to the end, and then when she’s recounting everything to the detective (this happens in like chapter two, so no spoiler there). You get the killer’s POV and Tess’ best friend’s POV, too, so everything was pretty well tied together. The story was honestly so complex at points that my head was left spinning in the most addictive way.
With the characters, I genuinely enjoyed learning about each one. Finding the nuances of each person as well as discovering their secrets added so much to the story. Tess, Allie, and other characters involved were very well developed. I especially loved our aging detective, Layla Washington. She was absolutely brilliant as a character.
The ending had me at the very edge of my seat (and to be completely honest, the whole book had me at the edge of my seat). I didn’t predict a lot because there were some red herrings throughout the book, but the ending was satisfying enough to where I felt completely content finishing this book.

Okay, so Tess was actually the perpetrator (was going to guess that, but then Jacob “shot” Allie in the head). Everything that Tess recounted about being chased through the caves actually happened to Allie. It was extremely terrifying as she tried to escape, and then ended up having to help Tess escape as well. I was so excited that Allie actually lived at the end and so did Ethan. It was a wonderful ending.
Overall, this book was exhilarating to read and not one you would want to put down to read later. I had so much fun listening to the audiobook version and genuinely think the author did an amazing job. Plot? Beautiful. Characters? Outstanding. Ending? The best. I couldn’t have asked for a better thriller/mystery novel.
