Book Review: The Bodyguard by Katherine Center

Hannah Brooks has just lost her mother, her boyfriend broke up with her the day after the funeral, and to top it all off, her boss won’t put her on another assignment as a bodyguard until she “grieves”. Hannah doesn’t know how to do that. She doesn’t even know how to take a break. All she knows how to do is her job: guarding important people and making sure they don’t get killed or injured. So, when she finally gets put on an assignment, she’s thrilled. Except, it’s for one of the country’s highest profile actors who hasn’t been seen since his accident years ago. Jack Stapleton isn’t exactly who Hannah thought he would be, and for the first time, she is having trouble separating her feelings and her job.

If you’ve read some of my book reviews over the last few years, you know that Katherine Center has become a common author that I love to read and review. Since The Bodyguard is getting a movie adaptation later this year, I had to add this one to the top of my list.
So, we’re following Hannah, who, after losing her mother, only wants another job (even though her mother’s last wish was for her to go on a vacation). Hannah has a job that’s a little different from most people’s: she is a bodyguard. She’s guarded politicians, billionaires, and many more people who have someone who may want to harm them. She’s resourceful and could easily kill a threat with only a ballpoint pen. She’s never guarded a movie star before, though, and certainly has NEVER been asked to pretend to be a movie star’s girlfriend in order to protect him. That’s where Jack Stapleton comes in and I honestly loved the chemistry he and Hannah had throughout the whole book. That’s one of the reasons I love Katherine Center so much is that she makes her romance novels just SO realistic. Hannah and Jack are no exception.
With the plot, you find out Jack and Hannah are both holding back secrets, but together, they find ways to overcome what’s been haunting them. Typical romance stuff, but all very engaging. This was an easy and quick read for me, so it didn’t take me long to fall in love and finish this novel.
The fake dating was such a fun addition to the “bodyguard” persona that Hannah had. It obviously makes things between her and Jack more complicated (not to mention that Jack technically has a tabloid picture-perfect girlfriend). What makes it even MORE fun is that Hannah ends up secluded at Jack’s family estate with his estranged brother and wonderful mother and father. The family dynamic of it all? Pure gold.
Overall, I really enjoyed this romance novel (as I do with all of Katherine Center’s work). There was chemistry, romantic tension, and a fun plot to top it all off. I can’t wait for the movie to come out to see how well it gets adapted!! (Don’t let us down, Netflix!!).
